Stress And Anxiety And Biofeedback Mechanism

Stress And Anxiety And Biofeedback Mechanism

Stress and anxiety are common psychological difficulties which can have a major effect on overall physical and psychological health. Traditional medicine has long used biofeedback as a way to potentially manage stress and anxiety. In biofeedback, an individual learns to modify their body’s biological functions, such as blood pressure, through the use of monitoring techniques and mental techniques. Biofeedback training is used to identify subtle changes in a person’s body. In particular, trainees focus on the effects of the body’s autonomic stress response, such as increased heart rate, increased sweating, and increased muscle tension. Certain relaxation techniques such as breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery are used to help reduce stress and allow for the body to return to a more balanced state. The goal of biofeedback is to provide individuals with more control and awareness of their bodies. By teaching the individual to sense the body’s tension and relaxation and to become aware of personal responses to stressful situations, the individual can modify their behaviors and regain control of their bodies. In addition, individuals learn to use cues from the machines which monitor body functions to recognize early warning signs of stress. In traditional medicine, biofeedback is often used in conjunction with other treatments such as yoga, herbal therapy, acupressure, acupuncture, and massage therapy. Chemical treatments such as benzodiazepines have also been used, but this approach should be used with caution since these treatments can be habit forming and can contribute to psychological dependency. Biofeedback is not a cure-all, but it can be a valuable tool to help individuals learn to recognize and reduce stress and anxious feelings. As with any form of mental wellness therapy, it is important to remember that biofeedback is only one part of a multidimensional approach to stress management. The best approach is to use a combination of techniques, including biofeedback, relaxation techniques, medication and lifestyle modification, to ensure a holistic approach to managing stress and anxiety.
