Traditional African medicine is a holistic health practice that involves the use of natural plants, herbs, animal parts, and minerals found in the African continent for the purpose of treating physical and emotional ailments. The practice of Traditional African medicine dates back centuries, and its use continues to varying degrees in some parts of the continent today. Traditional African medicine is based on the holistic belief that the human body is comprised of energies that reflect the larger universe and is linked to the use of indigenous plants, animals, and minerals. These natural substances are believed to hold vital spiritual, emotional, and physical healing energies. This holistic approach is quite different from modern Western medicine which relies mainly on chemically manufactured and patented drugs and procedures. Some of the most common forms of treatment within Traditional African medicine are through the use of plants and herbs. These plants and herbs are believed to contain healing properties in the form of vitamins, minerals, and antiseptics. Examples of herbs used are garlic, ginger, turmeric, lemon balm, Sage, and burdock root. Other forms of Traditional African medicine include the use of animal substances such as fat and skin for healing as well as the practice of Shamans and spiritual healers. Specific healing rituals and practices are used in traditional African medicine in order to bring the patient back into balance and health. These include spiritual ceremonies, divination, incantations, and drumming. Although traditional African medicine has been in existence for centuries, it has seen a decline in recent years due to the rise of modern Western medicine. Despite this, it is still widely practiced and embraced in many parts of Africa and throughout the developing world. In the medical world, Traditional African medicine is often looked upon as an alternative healthcare system, although it is believed to have the potential to truly complement modern medicine, providing a more comprehensive approach to health and healing.
