Sports therapy is a branch of traditional medicine used to treat injuries and conditions that are related to sports and athletic activities. It is used to improve the performance, fitness, recovery and overall well-being of athletes and non-athletes alike. The therapy focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries by using a combination of methods including physiotherapy, massage, taping, manipulation, strength and conditioning exercises. Sports therapy has been utilized for centuries in traditional medical practices. Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt all used sports therapy to treat athletes and soldiers as early as 3000 BC. In Europe, athletes and sports teams used massage to promote healing and relaxation prior to the 19th century. Studies have even found that in some cultures, during healing rituals, touching the body was an important part of the therapeutic process. Modern sports therapy utilizes various techniques like lymphatic drainage massage, electromyography, western and eastern massage techniques, and muscle energy techniques. For example, massage therapy is often used to improve circulation, relieve muscle tension, reduce spasms and decrease pain due to injury. Other therapies, such as electrical stimulation and ultrasound, are used to relax or strengthen muscle tissues. Additionally, stretching and strengthening exercises can be used to improve mobility, rehabilitation and performance. Recent studies have shown that sports therapy also helps to speed up recovery after injury and illness. Studies have also seen an improvement in joint flexibility, coordination, and range of motion from using sport therapy techniques. Sports therapy is beneficial for all types of athletes, from professional to amateur. Not only does it help to prevent and treat injuries, but can also help improve overall performance and well-being. This type of therapy can also help to reduce stress and promote a feeling of relaxation.
