The spectrum of therapeutic methods in traditional medicine is vast and includes a variety of approaches and techniques. Traditional medicine encompasses generations of wisdom and includes herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage and meditation. It is a holistic and non-invasive form of medicine, increasingly being recognized and embraced in the Western medical system. Herbal medicine is one of the oldest forms of traditional medicine, and has been used for centuries to treat a variety of illnesses and ailments. Herbal remedies can be used to treat both acute and chronic conditions, and involve the use of medicinal plants and herbs for healing. Various parts of the plant are used, ranging from leaves, flowers, roots, bark and berries. The active ingredients are then extracted and used to create remedies, often through concoctions known as tinctures or elixirs. Acupuncture is another commonly used form of traditional medicine. It involves the insertion of fine needles into specific parts of the body – known as meridian points – for the purpose of promoting physical and mental healing. It has been used for thousands of years and is thought to regulation the body’s natural energy, consequently relieving pain and treating a variety of different ailments. In the Western world, it is now widely accepted as a valid form of treatment for physical and emotional ailments and is therefore becoming increasingly popular. Massage is another form of traditional medicine, practised across many cultures. It involves techniques including rubbing, kneading, pressing, tapping and vibrating in order to stimulate the body’s natural healing capabilities. Massage is thought to be beneficial for treating both physical and psychological conditions, and may also help to calm an overactive mind. Massage therapists are skilled in applying the correct techniques in order to provide accurate diagnosis and healing. Lastly, meditation is another important form of traditional medicine. It involves finding a sense of inner peace and utilising techniques to achieve this in turn; it is thought to promote mindfulness, relaxation and overall wellness. Certain meditative practices are known to positively affect the immune system. Overall, traditional medicine has much to offer in terms of treatment and is an invaluable asset to the medical world. It is an ancient practice, full of wisdom and useful techniques that show us the importance of treating the body holistically and with care.
