Reiki is an alternative healing modality, or complementary therapy, originally from Japan and now practiced around the world. It is a natural, light-touch therapy that uses the energy of the practitioner to support relaxation and the healing process. Reiki is said to have originated in Japan over two thousand years ago and has been used by modern practitioners for more than one hundred years. Traditional Reiki is based on ancient techniques for healing and natural elements such as plants, minerals, and the five elements. Today, Reiki is typically practiced in its modern form, or Usui Reiki Ryoho, a system of healing specifically developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. Reiki treatments are said to promote physical and emotional well being and the healing process by creating an environment of encapsulated energy. This healing method seeks to balance and restore energy along pathways called “meridians” in the body. When the energy levels are low, individuals can experience physical and mental ailments. Reiki practitioners are trained to observe, interpret, and work with these energies to restore balance and health. Reiki can help to alleviate physical and emotional pain, encouraging desired and lasting changes within the body. It can also reduce stress, improve the immune system, accelerate the body’s healing process, and provide a deeper sense of relaxation. With its holistic view of health and wellness, Reiki has become increasingly popular in traditional and modern sciences, such as holistic medicine. Reiki is offered in many different settings such as clinics, spas, health retreats and hospitals. It can be used to help treat a variety of medical conditions including chronic fatigue, headaches, stress, depression, anxiety, and much more. The therapy is even being integrated into the health care system, with professionals in many medical fields recognizing the value of this healing modality. Reiki can promote balance, relaxation, and healing to those who seek its assistance.
