Phototherapy is a therapeutic modality that utilizes the therapeutic effects of light using various wavelengths of light. Sunlight has been used as an ancient form of medicine since prehistoric times, and has been employed in traditional medical practices around the world for centuries to treat both physical and psychological ailments. Phototherapy is used to attract light to a specific area of the body to stimulate healing processes in specific diseases and health conditions. The most common form of phototherapy in traditional medicine is Natural Light. It is believed to balance the Body's bio-energy or Chi. Natural sunlight energizes the body and increases mental alertness, and has also been used to treat a variety of conditions such as seasonal affective disorder, depression, arthritis, and skin disorders. In addition to natural sunlight, phototherapy has also been used to treat some medical conditions through the application of synthetic light sources, such as fluorescent lamps. This type of phototherapy is known as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). LLLT is a relatively new form of phototherapy used to treat inflammation, pain, wound healing, and skin conditions. Studies suggest that it can also be used to activate the body's immune system and aid in healing. In traditional medicine, phototherapy is also used to treat hormonal imbalances. By manipulating the exposure to various wavelengths of light, the production of hormones (such as melatonin and serotonin) can be affected. This can help regulate hormone levels, promote restful sleep, and improve moods by restoring balance to the body. Overall, phototherapy in traditional medicine can be a useful modality in the treatment of both physical and mental health conditions. It is important to note, however, that this type of therapy should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider as incorrect light dosage may cause negative side effects.
