Traditional medicine has played a pivotal role throughout history to keep individuals healthy and thriving on their journey of life. These practices, often based in a more holistic and natural approach to physical wellness, have been used since ancient times. Recently, the concept of mental health integration in traditional medicine has become a popular topic, as this field has further explored the link between physical and mental health. The core philosophies of traditional medicine are based around using natural remedies to treat physical ailments, and also the idea that mental and physical health are interconnected and that one can influence the other. Traditional medicines, such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and naturopathic medicine, look at the physical body holistically and believe that a disruption in any of the elements within the body, such as energy flow or emotions, can lead to illness or disease. With this in mind, traditional medicine has integrated the concept of mind into their practice to an extent, looking at mental wellbeing as a key part of maintaining health. This connection is seen particularly in the practice of meditation or mindfulness, which can be used to reduce stress and anxiety and promote positive emotional and mental health. Traditional medicine also draws on concepts of the interconnectedness of body and mind and the power of holistic approaches to health and wellbeing. While the integration of mind into traditional medical practice is still in its early stages, this promising field of medicine could be a game-changer in how we approach physical and mental health. Not only can it help us to recognise the importance of dealing with physical and mental issues on an equally balanced level, it can also create a greater understanding of our body’s interconnectedness and lead to more effective treatments. In addition, focusing on emotional and mental health from a holistic perspective through traditional medicine can provide an alternative to the often prescribed psychological drugs and therapies.
