Holistic dentistry, also known as biological dentistry, is a form of dentistry that takes an integrated approach to dental care by considering the effects of dental treatments on the overall health of the patient. Holistic dentistry seeks to prevent and treat dental problems with interventions that emphasize preventive care and consider the impact of the dental intervention on the patient’s overall health and well-being. In holistic dentistry, dental health and overall health are seen not as separate, but as parts of an interconnected whole. Traditional dentists focus on treating the effects of the disease, while holistic dentists take a more proactive approach to dental care, looking to understand the cause of the underlying problem and its effects on the patient’s overall health. Therefore, holistic dentists often use techniques such as nutritional counseling, detoxification, stress reduction and lifestyle advice to help patients achieve and maintain good dental health. An important aspect of holistic dentistry is its emphasis on the use of natural materials rather than traditional man-made products to treat and restore the teeth. Holistic dentists use non-toxic restorative and preventive materials, such as metal free amalgams and composites, to preserve as much of the existing tooth structure as possible. Also, holistic dentists may use homeopathic remedies and nutritional supplements to help prevent and treat oral health problems. Holistic dentistry is an important part of traditional medicine. Through holistic dentistry, researchers have gained a better understanding of how dental health can affect overall health, stressing the importance of a holistic approach to preventive care. Also, holistic dentistry has allowed dental professionals to focus on patient-centered care that emphasizes the use of non-toxic materials and natural therapies for the treatment and prevention of dental problems. Through such treatments, patients can achieve better oral health and improved overall well-being.
