Biological Actions

Traditional medicine has been used for centuries to heal ailments. The sources of traditional medicine are largely herbal, although some forms may include elements of animal or mineral origin. In some cases, what is known today as “alternative” or “complementary” medicine can also be considered part of traditional medicine. Traditional medicinal practices are often based on empirical knowledge passed down generations and are not necessarily based on scientific principles or evidence-based practices. However, traditional medicinal practices have become increasingly important and their biological effects are now being studied more carefully. There are a variety of biological actions associated with traditional medicine, and these vary depending on the agent used and the purpose of the treatment. In general, traditional medicine aims to support the body in its natural processes of healing. This is usually accomplished through physical and mental stimulants, sedatives, diuretics, emetics, elixirs, nervous system tonics, nutritional supplements, and other specifically tailored therapies. Each of these interventions affects the body in a unique way in order to promote healing. For example, physical and mental stimulants help to increase blood circulation and provide an energy boost, while sedatives aid in relaxation and reduce stress responses. Diuretics are used to increase urine output, and emetics can induce vomiting in order to rid the body of unwanted materials. Elixirs are compositions of herbs and other substances meant to boost overall health. Nervous system tonics can help to treat a variety of disorders, such as headaches, anxiety, and dizziness. And nutritional supplements provide extra macro- and micronutrients that can help support the body's natural processes. Other biological effects of traditional medicine also include immuno-modulatory effects, that is, they help to modulate the body's immune system; and anti-inflammatory effects, which aid in reducing swelling and redness in response to injury or irritation. In addition, traditional medicine can be used to improve the body's natural ability to fight off infection, support gastrointestinal balance, regulate hormone levels, reduce cholesterol, and support metabolic processes. Ultimately, while traditional medicine is not necessarily based on scientific evidence and can be difficult to verify, its impacts on the body's natural processes are gradually being understood and appreciated.
