Acupuncture is an ancient medical technique that has been practiced in various parts of the world for over two thousand years. This system of holistic medicine is based on the premise that energy, known as chi or qi, flows through the body along pathways known as meridians. The goal of acupuncture is to stimulate these pathways, promoting an adequate balance of qi in order to heal and support the body’s natural functions. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. It is believed that these points act as gateways to the body’s energy pathways. After being inserted, the needles are typically left in place for approximately fifteen minutes. Often times, practitioners may provide patients with additional therapies such as moxibustion and/or cupping. During the process, patients may experience a variety of sensations, ranging from slight pressure to slight pain. The efficacy of acupuncture needle therapy is still a subject of debate, as its underlying principles are difficult to measure or prove. Many clinicians, however, attribute acupuncture’s effects to its ability to stimulate the release of endorphins, a type of natural painkiller produced by the body. Additionally, studies have shown that acupuncture can influence areas of the brain that are responsible for pain perception. While the use of acupuncture needles is generally considered safe, patients should always consult with a licensed practitioner in order to ensure a safe experience. Needles should always be sterile and never used more than once. Lastly, it's important for patients to communicate any discomfort or pain associated with the procedure, as this may help the practitioner better adjust the treatment plan as needed.
