Title : Beyond symptom management: The ayurvedic approach to chronic pain and integrative health
Abstract:
Background: Chronic pain is one of the major challenges facing modern healthcare. Despite advances in pharmacological and surgical interventions, many patients continue to experience persistent pain, functional limitations, medication-related concerns, and reduced quality of life. This has increased interest in traditional medical systems and integrative approaches that focus not only on symptom relief but also on identifying and addressing underlying imbalances.
Objective: This presentation explores the Ayurvedic understanding of chronic pain and its potential contribution to contemporary integrative healthcare. It will examine how Ayurveda approaches pain through an individualized assessment of Dosha imbalance, Agni, tissue involvement, metabolic factors, lifestyle, and the interaction between physical and psychological factors.
Content: Ayurveda considers chronic pain as a multifactorial condition requiring a comprehensive and individualized approach. The Ayurvedic clinical framework includes assessment of the patient's constitution, disease progression, involved tissues and channels, digestive and metabolic status, lifestyle, and psychological factors. Therapeutic strategies may include appropriate internal medication, diet and lifestyle modification, external therapies, Panchakarma procedures, localized therapeutic interventions, and individualized rehabilitation.
Particular attention will be given to the role of Panchakarma and other Ayurvedic therapeutic approaches in the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain, arthritis, spinal disorders, and selected chronic pain conditions. The presentation will also discuss the importance of moving beyond a purely symptom-oriented model towards a more comprehensive approach aimed at improving function, quality of life, and long-term health.
Conclusion: Ayurveda offers a personalized and systems-oriented framework that may contribute valuable perspectives to the field of integrative health. Its emphasis on individualized assessment, prevention, lifestyle modification, therapeutic procedures, and long-term restoration of balance provides opportunities for meaningful dialogue between traditional medical knowledge and contemporary healthcare.
