Title : Can the Chinese Herbal Formula Jia Wei Xiao Yao San and Astragoloside IV Impact Hormones Antral Follicle Count

A pilot study of nine participants was conducted in 2019. Acceptance into the trial included women with regular menstruation, chronic sleep disturbance of three or more days every week, 35-45 years of age, and not currently on herbs or hormone therapy. The participants in the trial were followed over a three-month period during which they took, twice daily, two herbal formula concentrates provided by a single manufacturing source to maximize herbal integrity. The formulas, Astragaloside IV and Jia Wei Xiao Yao San, were of interest. Jia Wei Xiao Yao San is the most commonly prescribed formula for the treatment of infertility and women’s general health. Astragaloside IV is a single tonic used clinically for hundreds of years for the recovery from a variety of debilitating health issues. This herb is currently being investigated by pharmaceutical companies because of the multiple potential health benefits. Both formulas have empirically demonstrated therapeutic effects from either singular or complex chemical constituents. The subjects submitted to pre and post blood chemistry panels for hormonal values of FSH, AMH,and E2 drawn at QuestLabs. The telomerase dried blood spot test was used for efficiency as this was performed with a single finger prick and transfer of blood to the sample card at the entrance and exit interviews with the subjects. Telomerase data was used to determine if the herbal formulas had a longevity effect on the subjects' ovaries. Telomere length is a good indicator of biological age. Telomeres shorten with recurring cellular division, eventually arriving at the end of the cell's life span. Some studies have shown telomerase lengthening with the use of herbal extracts suggesting telomeres have the ability to self-repair. The researched herbal formulas have historically been used as longevity decoctions. Ultrasound was used to examine the endometrial thickness, the Antral Follicle count, and any measured changes post trial. The data collected presented results that were unexpected. Where the historical scholarly teaching advocates that the herbs used are hormonally estrogenic, there was no significant impact in the hormone profile. The most surprising result was a significant increase in Antral Follicle count. One infertile participant was pregnant by the end of the study
